What is the Cambridge TKT, and is it worth taking?
TKT gets mentioned in every teacher training advertisement in Kerala and explained in almost none of them. It is a modular exam with no pass mark — and that matters.
The Teaching Knowledge Test is an exam from Cambridge Assessment English. It is not a course, not a licence, and not a qualification to teach in an Indian school. It is a test of what you know about teaching English.
That is a narrower thing than the advertising usually suggests, and it is still genuinely useful — provided you know which of your problems it solves.
The three core modules
Each is a separate 80-minute paper of objective questions. You can take them in any order, in any sitting, and there is no requirement to take all three.
Module 1 — Language and background to language learning and teaching. Grammar and lexical terminology, phonology, and the main theories of how people acquire a language. The most content-heavy module for someone without a linguistics background.
Module 2 — Lesson planning and use of resources. Choosing aims, sequencing activities, selecting and adapting materials, and using what is actually in the room.
Module 3 — Managing the teaching and learning process. Classroom language, error correction, grouping, feedback, and managing the class as a group of people rather than a syllabus.
How it is graded
Bands 1 to 4, per module. There is no pass or fail — you receive a band describing your demonstrated knowledge, and Band 3 indicates a good level. The certificate does not expire.
Because grading is per module, TKT is unusually forgiving: a weak result in one module does not undo the others, and you can retake a single paper rather than everything.
What TKT does and does not do
It does give you an externally examined, internationally recognised statement of teaching knowledge. That travels — a Gulf or Southeast Asian employer knows the name, which is not true of most local certificates.
It does force you to learn the shared vocabulary of teaching. Being able to say this is a controlled practice stage rather than this bit is what makes the rest of professional development possible.
It does not assess whether you can teach. There is no observed teaching in TKT at all. It is a knowledge test, and a person can score Band 4 and still run a poor class.

Who should take it
Working teachers without a formal ELT qualification; graduates moving into teaching from another field; and anyone planning to teach abroad, where the Cambridge name carries weight.
Less useful for someone who already holds a strong assessed teaching certificate with observed practice, and for whom the knowledge half is already covered.
Preparing for it
TKT is closed-book and terminology-heavy, so the real work is vocabulary: the names for things you may already do instinctively. Most candidates prepare in six to twelve weeks alongside teaching.

- Is there a pass mark for the Cambridge TKT?
- No. TKT reports a band from 1 to 4 for each module, describing the knowledge you demonstrated. Band 3 indicates a good level. There is no pass or fail, and the certificate does not expire.
- Do I have to take all three TKT modules?
- No. Each module is a separate paper and stands on its own. You can take one, two or all three, in any order and at different sittings, and retake a single module without repeating the others.
- Does TKT qualify me to teach English in a school in India?
- Not by itself. Most government and aided school posts require a B.Ed, which TKT does not replace. TKT is valuable for coaching centres, language institutes, online teaching and work abroad, where the Cambridge name is recognised.
- Does TKT test my teaching ability?
- No — it tests teaching knowledge only, through objective questions. There is no observed teaching practice in TKT. That is why it pairs well with a course that does include observed practice, rather than substituting for one.
